12th January 2023

AHCS (incorporating RCCP) announce Graduate Clinical Exercise Physiologist registration route now open - Higher Education MSc degree programmes can now apply for accreditation.

The graduate routeway for Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEP’s) is the next crucial step in providing a workforce to ensure high quality exercise provision to support healthcare in the U.K. CEP services aim to optimise physical function and quality of life whilst promoting long-term health through lifestyle modification and behaviour change. Those higher education MSc degree programmes meeting the CEP-UK curriculum framework can now apply to be assessed for accreditation by the Academy for Healthcare Science (incorporating RCCP). Those programmes wishing to be assessed against the standards should email lizanne.steenkamp@ahcs.ac.uk. This process will allow some current MSc degree programmes to have accredited CEPs graduating in Sept 2023.

For those programmes wishing to apply now or in the future: A webinar will be held on the 24th January at 15:30 entitled AHCS (RCCP) Accreditation process on teams to overview the process and provide an opportunity for programme teams to ask questions. This will be recorded and be accessible on the CEP-UK website following the event.

The opening of the graduate routeway coincides with the 1-year anniversary of Clinical Exercise Physiologists being eligible for professional registration through the equivalency process. Over the past year, 50 individuals have been conferred the title Clinical Exercise Physiologist and a further 155 individuals have begun the process of completing the application for registration. For CEP specific advice on applying via the equivalency process visit: https://www.clinicalexercisephysiology.org.uk To apply visit: https://rccp.co.uk/become-registered/how-to-apply/

N.B. Those wishing to apply via the equivalency process, the time for reduced price cost expires on 28th Feb 2023. Those applications submitted after this date; the cost will be £175 (this cost includes assessment of application plus annual fee).

Professional registration via equivalence or graduate routes represents a step-change in the provision of exercise prescription in clinical populations in the U.K.. Those registered are qualified health professionals proficient in exercise testing, prescription and delivery of evidence-based interventions for the prevention, treatment and long-term management of chronic and complex conditions. They work as part of multi-disciplinary teams of healthcare and rehabilitation providers across multiple sectors and settings.
